bergamot orange : ウィキペディア英語版
bergamot orange

''Citrus bergamia'', the bergamot orange (pronounced, standard English: or GenAm: ) is a fragrant fruit the size of an orange, with a yellow color similar to a lemon.
Genetic research into the ancestral origins of extant citrus cultivars found bergamot orange to be a probable hybrid of ''Citrus limetta'' and ''Citrus aurantium''.〔Federici, C.T., Roose, M.L. and Scora, R.W. (2000). (RFLP ANALYSIS OF THE ORIGIN OF CITRUS BERGAMIA, CITRUS JAMBHIRI, AND CITRUS LIMONIA ). Acta Hortic. 535, 55-64. DOI: 10.17660/ActaHortic.2000.535.6〕 It is inedible, but extracts have been used to scent food, perfumes, and cosmetics.〔Davidson, Alan. ''The Oxford Companion to Food'' (2006). Second Edition. Ed. Tom Jaine. p. 75. ISBN 0192806815.: "The bergamot orange is not edible and is grown only for its fragrant oil, although its peel is sometimes candied."〕 Use on the skin can be carcinogenic; excessive consumption can be toxic.〔
==Etymology==
The word bergamot is etymologically derived from ''bergamotta'' in Italian, originating from ''Bergamo'', a town in Italy.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Online Etymology Dictionary )
It is related to French ''bergamote'', from Italian ''bergamotta'', of Turkish origin: ''beg-armudi'' or ''beg armut'' ("prince's pear" or "prince of pears).〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Collins Dictionaries - Free Online )
